Mathematics
This term in Mathematics, our initial focus will be on Number and Algebra. More specifically, students will utilise their understanding of fractions and decimals to investigate Money and Financial Mathematics. They will explore concepts such as unit price, ‘best buys’, budgets and interest. With a strong focus on Student Voice and Agency, students will have the opportunity to plan and decide how to spend a portion of the Level Six Camp budget, leading up to the event. They will also be given access to the online educational program, ‘Banqer’, which provides a simulated banking experience. Students will build their knowledge of income and expenses, while developing real-life skills that will set them up for the future.
As the term progresses, the focus will shift to Measurement and Geometry, where students will build their Geometric Reasoning. They will investigate two-dimensional shapes that are alike and different, determined by their geometric properties such as sides, corners and angles. Students will delve deeper into angles and the angle properties of quadrilaterals, triangles and line intersections. They will continue to use SURF strategies to help them find success within their learning.
After students return from Camp ADANAC, they will finish the term with a reflection on Statistics and Probability, by deepening their understanding of statistical measures of central tendency, mean, median, mode and range. They will use these measures to analyse and interpret data.
Key vocabulary for Mathematics: income, expenses, simple interest, geometric, mean, median, mode.
