STEM VR INCURSION RECAP

OUR PLACE IN SPACE

On Thursday June 1st, the students of 5/6 got to engage in a VR experience conducted by Steve from Duck Duck Moose Workshops for their STEM session. For one hour each class was taken on a virtual experience where they were able to blast off on an immersive journey to the International Space Station (ISS). This experience connected to the learning they have been doing in STEM and their Faith Life Inquiry sessions surrounding Space.

Below are some student reflections from their experiences of the incursion!

During the VR headset incursion we had the opportunity to experience what it's like in space, as well at a space station. While on the space station we learnt a lot of cool facts about space, such as  how you cook a burger, how you wash your hair and different parts of the space station. We also were able to do a space walk in space. We got to see planets, stars, satellites and the milky way, which was very realistic and interesting. We both felt very surprised that it looked and felt so real! At the start we all were trying to figure out how to use the controller to be able to walk around, but after a couple of minutes it became familiar. Mr Steve was very kind and helpful and gave us lots of amazing tips. Overall we had such an amazing experience, and it felt like we were really there in space, and the ISS.

On the 1st of June the year 5/6 ‘s had an incursion about space in VR. We learned how they make burgers, wash their hair, what it looks like outside of the ship and more. We also got to play a game where you shoot asteroids and space junk. It was an intriguing and enjoyable experience. What worked well was that everyone had a go, and it was a new experience for some students. Some challenges we faced were moving around the ship and dealing with zero gravity. What we would do differently next time is look more around the ship and enhance our experience. Mr Steve, our speaker, was very kind, clear and thoughtful that everyone got a turn. He helped us out when we were stuck and made the experience out of this world.
