Year 3/4 Bulletin

Where we live is influenced by climate, vegetation and living conditions.
Volcano Dreaming
Above is a tapestry that has been installed in the MPC for all students to experience and visit. We took students into the MPC to view the exhibition “Volcano Dreaming”, which is a collection of images designed to highlight flora, fauna, and landscapes of greater Melbourne and beyond. Students then created “wonderings” from the images that they found, and from that we formed our new Big Idea.
To the left is a passage from the “Volcano Dreaming” website, outlining how the image came to be and the purpose behind the photography piece. dice.
Driving questions – focusing the learning
- Where do we live? (climate, hemisphere, location), (earth, country, local)
- How does the environment support people and other living things? (ecosystems, balance between government)
- How can we support the environment to maintain and sustain where we live?
Learning Intention: To identify key data and information within a text.
Task: Letter Writing
Students choose a place in Australia they would like to visit or have been to before.
Write a letter to a friend about the place using the fact files attached.
Learning experience:
We began the lesson looking at a map of Australia and discussing the key features that can be found. The focus was to identify the capital cities and their locations around Australia.
Around each classroom we placed information posters about each capital city and asked students to find the following key information:
- Location
- Climate and weather
- Population
- Natural landscapes
- Man made landscapes
We then arranged our information in order to use it within our letters.
Below are some examples of students' work.
What you can do at home:
We will be sending the letters home with your child today. Please read and discuss the letter. Ask questions about the capital city chosen.
Questions may include:
- Why was this city chosen?
- What information could have been added to the letter?
- What information could have been omitted next time?
