Marvellous Maths Fun Day 2023

Last Friday the 19th of May, we held our annual Maths Fun Day with a series of fun hands-on activities centred on Mathematics. Staff and students came to school in fancy dress with t-shirts decorated with formulas and other breathtaking maths related costumes. The students in Grades 3 to 6 participated in The Great Maths Quiz, whereby students in the same year level batted it out against each other to find the winning Maths Champions for the day. The Great Maths Quiz was a great success with 4 Blue, 5 Blue and 6 Red winning.

Students in all different grades participated in engaging maths games and completed different challenges through ‘Minute to Win it Games.’ There were also maths-themed scavenger hunts for students in the Prep, Grade One and Grade Two around the school. Furthermore, students in all year levels were engaged in maths picture story books because who doesn't love a good picture story book!

We know that one effective way to improve student engagement in the primary classroom is through the use of picture books. They provide interesting contexts for mathematics and make maths lessons engaging and creative. Some students investigated the famous Chessboard puzzle which deals with exponential growth as well as exploring Fibanacci’s sequence used to create the Golden Spiral.

Another highlight of the day was the students spending time playing maths games and learning alongside their buddies.

We enjoyed planning the events of the day with the goal of inspiring students to appreciate mathematics as a useful and important subject with numerous applications in our everyday lives. My aim of the Maths Fun day is to instil in our students a positive idea about maths which I hope will last a lifetime.
