Around the College

Indigenous Garden – It's a good start.

Last year members from the Sustainability Team visited St Joseph’s Sorrento and witnessed the amazing work of the Green Gang under the guidance of Ms Jane Byrne. It is fitting that indigenous plants gifted from the Oblate Parish school will feature in our gardens. Understanding what we are planting and why, is part of the programme and seeking the right advice is essential. Mr Hunter is organising connections with the Bunurong Land Council to ensure we are getting the correct advice and we are learning about ecological balance in the process. Representatives from Monash University and Monash Council visited the College earlier in the year and encouraged us to wait for planting time which is May, June and July. Knox Environmental Society (KES) provided the plants.

Sustainability Team members, Bradley Le, Chibby Anyadoro, Cameron Boey and Brandon Paul set to work planting the following species in the Freeway runoff area developed by the VCAL students a few years ago.

  • Kangaroo Grass – Themeda triandra
  • Muttonwood – Myrsine howittiana
  • Mountain Tea Tree – Leptospermum grandifolium
  • Hop Goodenia – Goodenia ovata

It is a start, because it is hoped once the Year 8 development is finished our Outdoor Education Centre will be a focus for the team, as will the flagpole space, the Year 7 gardens and the spaces under the trees near the quadrangle.

Thank you to Mr Coghlan and Mr Tony Rolfe for organising our first planting. Mr Saaksjarvi for his sign on recycled timber, Mr Hunter for establishing the links with the Bunurong Land Council and organising meetings and excursions, Mr de Fanti for inspiring us in our Geography class and Mr Brendan Rolfe with the garden and maintenance team for supporting us with equipment and advice.

VCE Performing Arts — Drama Ensemble

On Monday night, our VCE Performing Arts students performed an assessed ensemble to a live audience. They were tasked with unpacking the theme of 'fear' using a variety of styles and presenting it in a non-linear structure. The students were assessed on their expressive skills and their ability to remain in character throughout the performance.

It was amazing to see such an incredible amount of hard work and creativity from these talented young men!
