Careers

From the Careers Desk

It's been another busy start to the term and there are more exciting career related events to come.

Careers in Health Day at WDHS

More than a dozen year 9 and 10 students attended a full day of information sessions and immersion activities at WDHS on the 17th of July. The health sector is the second largest employer in our region, so those attending left know that there were a vast number of fulfilling career options and pathways open to them. Thanks to WDHS, LLEN and SWTafe for arranging and running a wonderful day.

Year 10 into 11 Information Night

The year 10 into 11 information night was held in the West Gym on Monday 29th July. A huge team effort from all staff involved delivered a great night that gave every student attending the opportunity to begin investigating their educational futures. Each faculty provided students and parents alike with information about VCE, VCAL & VET, the variety of subjects on offer and advice about what each one entailed. With this knowledge, students could feel confident that they were making selections that were fully informed and supported.

It was also exciting for students to go on to speak with one of the five tertiary institutions present. Representatives from Deakin Warrnambool, Uni SA, Fed Uni Tafe, RIST, and SWTafe were on hand to explain, reassure and inspire those with questions about their future steps and aspirations. Alongside these institutions were also representatives from LLEN, Centrelink, WDEA & Westvic to provide further information about all the related services that students could access now and into the future.

Students and parents reported that they appreciated the opportunity to find out about what was on offer. They said it was helpful for them as they could now begin understanding what the final years of secondary education meant, and what future direction they might consider and plan for.

Year 9 Individual Morrisby Interviews

As part of a State Government initiative, all year 9 public school students have been provided with free access to the highly respected Morrisby report. The test was completed in Term 2 during Year 9 Careers Week and the interviews took place over four days from Monday 29th July. Two interviewers spent a minimum of thirty minutes with each student reviewing, delving into and analyzing their individual results. The student reported that they felt comfortable during the sessions that were informative and helpful for them to identify their natural skills, passions and preferences. The timing could not have been better for them as they will be making subject choices for year 10 and beyond in the coming weeks.

Year 9s to Sheepvention for the Career Trail

On the afternoon of Tuesday the 6th of August, all year nine students will attend Sheepvention to take part in the all new and exciting Careers Trail initiative. Students will be able to follow an established trail around the site to speak to clearly identified stall holders that are ready and primed to speak to them about their industry and their career journeys. There are also regular guest presenters from a range of industries who will provide an insight into the career and job opportunities available to students at a local, regional, national and international level.

VTAC Information Sessions

On Wednesday afternoon a VTAC representative is presenting to year twelve and eleven VCE students at school. During the session he will explain to them the processes and procedures of applying for further education courses in 2020 through VTAC.

Following on from this, there is a more detailed information session at THAC for students and parents beginning at 7pm in the Performing Arts Center.

Year 10 into 11 Student Interviews.

Over the coming week year ten students are going to attend pre-booked interviews to discuss and clarify their course and subject choices for 2020. Parents are welcomed to attend. Following on from these interviews, students will log their subject choices including three standbys. All teachers are available to provide further advice and information if a student is still unsure or unclear of the choices available to them.

International House Melbourne University Presentation

On the 29th of August, representatives from International House Melbourne University are presenting during lunch to any interested student about the accommodation they have on offer. Please attend to find out more.

ADFA Presentation

On the 5th of September representatives from the ADFA will be visiting Baimbridge to provide students with information about the courses, the numerous pathways and career opportunities on offer. There will be capacity for small group interviews for senior students who have a specific interest in pursuing a future in this exciting direction.
