NAPLAN

Over the last two weeks, our Level 3 and Year 5 students have completed the NAPLAN tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.  This year students at Chelsea Heights PS completed the tests online; by 2020 it is expected that all schools across Australia have moved to NAPLAN online.

You may have seen reports in the media of some schools experiencing significant delays, interruptions or other technical problems.  Luckily, that was not the case at CHPS.  Apart from some very minor glitches on the first day, the online tests could not have ran more smoothly.  A major reason behind this was the thorough preparation by our NAPLAN coordinator, Miss Emily White, who ensured that both teachers and students were confident and skilled in using the online platform.  A big thank you to all of our Level 3 and 5 teachers for their calm and organised approach to the administering of the tests.

The key difference from the traditional paper tests, to taking the NAPLAN tests online, is that each test adapts based on the student’s performance.  Adaptive testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and measure student achievement more precisely.  Individual student reports will be sent home later this year.

Letter of Acknowledgement - NAPLAN Achievement

Our Principal, Ms Jane Satchwell, recently received the following letter in recognition of the outstanding work our students, staff and school community have collectively achieved in terms of student learning outcomes, as measured by NAPLAN 2018.  We are extremely proud to share this with you...

Dear Jane,

I have been advised by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), that your school has been identified as having demonstrated substantially above average gain in 2018 NAPLAN achievement.

This is a significant achievement, with few schools achieving this level of recognition within the Bayside Peninsula Area (BPA).

Our area provides for over 86,000 students and this is considerable recognition of the work you and your teachers have achieved for your particular students.

I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate you, your school staff and community for your efforts in achieving this outstanding result.

I would appreciate that you pass on my congratulations to your staff and thank them for their efforts on my behalf.

I would also appreciate you presenting this letter to your School Council, as they should also be aware of the significance of this achievement and of the quality of the teaching program clearly evident at your school.

Again, thank you to you and your staff for your concerted efforts in improving outcomes for children at your school.

Yours sincerely,

Simon Hamilton

Progress Reports

The second student progress reports will be available on Friday 31st May.  These reports will show students’ achievement, effort and behaviour in the current units of learning undertaken in the first half of Term 2.  The results from the Term 1 reports will also appear, allowing you to compare the progress.

Below is an example of a Term 2 progress report – this one shows that the student’s effort and behaviour has improved to ‘Well Above’ for both areas, and the academic achievement has also improved.
