Intercultural Day

Year 9 Intercultural Day

On Thursday, 8th August all Year 9 NHS students took part in Intercultural Day. The day was a fantastic success, with students all learning something new about some of the cultures in the area they live. Luckily we managed to dodge the bad weather that was forecast, and enjoyed some of Melbourne’s more pleasant winter weather. Students visited a variety of sites in the Darebin area and surrounds, including the Islamic Museum in Thornbury, Melbourne Buddhist Centre in Brunswick, Darebin Intercultural Centre in Preston, IJapanese Language School in the CBD, and the Aboriginal Heritage Walk in the Botantic Gardens. They learned about how culture is expressed, and explored issues of identity and belonging. A part of their Connect tutorial program, students are reflecting on what they learned and are sharing this with their peers.

My Intercultural Day

On Thursday, August the 8th, I visited the Darebin Intercultural Centre in Preston. Firstly, our guide showed us a video about racial discrimination. That made me sad because a lot of people experience racial discrimination. After the video she asked us three questions:

  • How did you feel after watching the video? I replied that I was disappointed and sad because human’s rights need to be equal.
  • Her second question asked us for our ideas about racial discrimination.  I wondered how many people have experienced racial discrimination?
  • Lastly she wanted to know how to help people to eliminate racial discrimination. So we had to design an activity.

Then another person talked to us about human rights including freedom, equality, respect and security. And our guide let us choose one that interests us the most. I am very interested in respect because I think respect is fundamental between people. If you don’t respect others, how can you be respected yourself? After this we viewed a mural by artist Hayden Dewar which featured a man who was an anti-nuclear and Indigenous Rights warrior . Then we were told some history about the Aborigines of Australia. This was new information for me because I come from Inner Mongolia!  Afterwards my group had lunch at a Chinese restaurant in Preston. It was a very delicious fired rice and rice noodle dish. The day was tiring but I learned a lot about Australian culture.

The IJapanese Bento Box Excursion was a very positive and interesting experience. When we arrived at the venue we were greeted by friendly faces, during the excursion we learned about bento boxes and made our very own Totoro Bento Box. While making it we also learned Japanese words for the ingredients we were using.

Year 9 Intercultural day was a great experience. At the Islamic museum of Australia, we really learnt a lot about the Muslim culture particularly in Australia. After making our own way there, we enjoyed a delicious intercultural lunch at the museum’s café. With the guidance of some lovely staff, we toured around the museum soaking up all the information that the museum displayed. Overall, I really enjoyed the day and I would definitely go back and spend more time at the Islamic museum.
