Innovation at work

In the last newsletter we announced the recipients of the 2019 Thrive Fund - Innovate grants. These students, clubs and staff have received grants of up to $500 to implement an innovative project that will help enhance an aspect of the school.

This time we bring you group profiles from two grant recipients - watch this space for more profiles and project updates.

The Innovate Grants are funded through the generous donations of our families and community to the Northcote Thrive Fund. Thank you for making this possible.

Lunchtime Library STEM Activities

Group names and the three words that would best describe you as a group:

Lunchtime Library STEM Activities.

Curious, collaborative, fun

What is your project:

The Library Team in collaboration with the Design and Technology department will be introducing STEM activities to the library one lunchtime per week. Activities will include programming robots, building electronic circuits, developing digital art and building sensors. These activities will complement the developing STEM and sustainability collection/corner.

Why do you think it will make a difference to Northcote High School?

Students can collaborate, create and communicate using 21st Century technologies. Skills acquired could be problem solving, computational thinking, judgement and decision making. While having fun students are incidentally building future career skills.

What are you excited about / looking forward to in this project?

We are hoping to see cross year level friendships and support build through shared experiences. Working with these technologies are fun and it will be great to see students experiment with the technologies to develop their own outcomes.

What do you think will be your biggest challenge?

Maintaining the physical resources for a year!

How can people get involved / help you achieve your goal?

Once we have established a regular day for the STEM activities we will be promoting through Connect classes and newsletter and plasma screens. Any students or staff with STEM ideas are welcome to come and share their ideas. Pop into the library any time for further information.

Is there anything else we should know?

Everyone is welcome.
