Physical Education Classes
During term 2 all Year 8 Physical Education classes have undertaken basketball as one of their units. Basketball is run as a SEPEP unit (Sport Education in Physical Education).
The SEPEP concept involves students taking responsibility for the running of a sports carnival. Students take on a job and fulfil that role for the entire unit. Students can choose to be the captain, coach, team manager, event manager, scorer, umpire or results person. Students do their job when their team is not playing or before and after matches.
Captains warm their team up at the start of every session. Coaches teach skill and strategy in a dedicated skill session at the start of each lesson. Team Managers organise the equipment needed for the lesson. Event Managers decide the play for the day ie: today we will play 6 x 8 minute matches. Umpires and scorers run each game and the results people collate the scores at the end of the lesson and create a ladder for the following lesson.
Using this method of teaching students develop independence in their learning, they learn to negotiate and collaborate with their peers and develop their physical skills via peer teaching.
Year 7 students participate in Bat Tennis as a SEPEP unit in term 4. Year 9 students run all of their units using the SEPEP concept.
