Cadets

Sarah Byron

On the 4th of May Year 8’s and 9’s packed up and headed out bush for a week to participate in the annual May camp for cadets. Throughout the week, the cadets participated in a large range of activities, including self-defence, bush walking, a CFA lesson and abseiling.

The first day turned out to be one of the worst days of the week because of the pouring rain while we were trying to set up. However, everyone managed to push through and eventually made it to the next day. The second day was kicked off with the first group of Year 9’s heading off for the bush walking and abseiling out at Halls Gap. The cadets who remained at the camp participated in activities such as camouflage and concealment, where they had the opportunity to play hide and seek in a bush environment and the self-defence lesson.

On Wednesday, the second group of Year 9’s went out to Halls Gap. This ended up being one of the best days: everyone was able to have showers to freshen up, and parents joined us at camp for the Mass in the evening. The CFA volunteers came to camp on Thursday to inform the cadets on fire safety, and let them use the hoses on the fire truck. After a half-an-hour sleep in, the cadets were woken up to Sweet Caroline being blasted over the loudspeakers on the final day. We headed back to Hamilton following a frantic rush to pack everything onto trailers and into the buses. A huge thank you goes out to all the teachers who came out to help, the ACS for assisting us, Mary for cooking all the meals, Andrew Bowman and his wife for aiding us in HQ, the volunteer firefighters for giving up their time to come and teach us, Captain Byron and Major O’Keefe for organising and running the camp.
