Term 2 Physical Education @ EDSC

Another exciting term has almost ended, with events of the last two weeks in Melbourne not stopping the enthusiasm of our students in both Middle and Senior School Physical Education programs.

At East Doncaster Secondary College we pride ourselves on maintaining and excelling in Physical Education and Inter-school Sport. The programs we offer are diverse and are aimed at promoting physical activity, educating students about various sports/recreational activities and to teach life-long health related skills.

Our Year 7 and 8 students have spent the second half of Term 2 participating in the EDSC 5-Star Athletics Award. This program has allowed students to test their skills and performance against pre-established norms in selected throws, jumps and runs. Learning the appropriate techniques in these events, along with working as a team member and assisting in officiating / measuring / timing of events has been the focus. Students have still been able to work through this program whilst learning remotely – focusing more on middle distance running, where measuring and timing their own 800m and 1500m with the assistance of apps such as ‘Strava’ and ‘Map My Run’ being used.

Year 9s have been exploring sports that are prominent in both European and Australian culture throughout the term, with games of non-contact Handball and Touch Rugby being some of the highlights (amongst many sports) across all classes. During remote learning, students have participated in sessions utilising different methods of training such as Body Resistance and Plyometrics. These were done with minimal equipment and could be easily done within the constraints of being at home.

Our Senior students have continued the year ramping up their studies, leading into exams for Year 10 and 11s and major SACs for Year 12s to conclude Unit 3. Careful management during their brief stint at remote learning focused on taking the time to stay active, ensuring a balanced diet and taking extended breaks away from the computer.

We very much look forward to resuming on-site Physical Education for all classes, when possible, later this term heading into Term 3.
