Knox Division AFL Girls Football Championships

What a wonderful day it was last Friday at the Knox Division AFL Girls Football Championships! Our girls in their new St Simon football jerseys were excited, enthusiastic and ready to face the competition ahead of them.

In the morning, we were greeted by a superstar in the game, Abby Holmes who represented the Hawthorn Football Club on the day. The girls spent some time chatting and getting tips on what it takes to make it as a female athlete in the game. It was great to see St Simon’s students captured in some of the Hawthorn Football Club video media which can be viewed in the link below.

Throughout the day, our girls played just like the AFL champions of old, tough with grit and courage. At every contest, our girls did their best to shrug off the opponents tackles and to move the ball quickly towards our forward line.

In our pool Division matchups, St Simon generated more scoring chances than our opposition. In all three of our pool games, our girls kicked many goals and were hungry to score more and more after each match. Our defense across the field was immaculate which resulted in keeping all of our opponents scoreless. Our three wins in the pool matches allowed us to advance to the finals. It was fantastic to see Camryn Rabie win our pool’s best and fairest which was well deserved.

In our finals match up, our girls powered through the quarter and semi finals, claiming victory with great shots at goal. In the Grand final match, it was anyone's game going into the second half of the match. However, our opponents had a lot of momentum coming out of the huddle and made sure their scoring opportunities were capitalised. By the end of the game, St Simon had lost 15 to 1. Overall, our girl’s were runners up to the champions on the day but each and every girl was pleased with their performance and walked off the field with their head held high and happy to be part of the experience.

It is true to say that we are all extremely proud of our girl’s football team! Each and every girl encouraged each other to do their very best and demonstrated great teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the entire day. It was fantastic to see the support of our parents on the day. We greatly appreciate all their encouragement with sending their children early to school for training.

I hope all the girl’s after their experience continue to pursue playing AFL football in the future.
