Glimpes of Mount Erin's Rich Heritage

The Bell

To every thing - turn, turn, turn

There is a season - turn, turn, turn

And a bell for every purpose under heaven

Recently a knock on the Boarding Office door found a chance meeting with Erin Earth Manager and Kildare teacher Mr Ben Holt.  He had heard the bell situated in the Mount Erin grounds ringing - at the same time  as we were all wondering what that sound was.

It had not been heard for at least 10 years.

From the book.:   "ALL PEOPLES CLAP YOUR HANDS"

Mount Erin Boarding School Centenary Wagga Wagga  1890 -1990

                                  Author: Sister Rosarie Connell PBVM

Excerpt:

"But most of all, boarders of the pre-seventies decades will remember the BIG BELL that rang Angelus morning noon and night.  Its origin was recorded in 1881 in J. O'Connor's "Brief History of the Presentation Convent, Wagga Wagga:

" A magnificent Bell was presented by Mr. William Rudd. It was specially cast by the Messrs Murphy, Thomas Street, Dublin, to the order of the Reverend William Cullen, nephew of the late Cardinal Cullen. It bears on one side, a representation of the Sacred Heart and the name of the Convent, and on the other a harp encircled with shamrocks."

It is planned to have the bell return to ringing daily soon  at 12 Noon.
