An Overview of our Learning

Please see below an overview of our Inquiry Learning for Term Three.

Unit Title: The Animal World

Through Line: Life

Learning Area/s: Science (Biological)

Content:

Science Content Descriptors – Science Understanding

Biological sciences

  • Living things have a variety of external features and live in different places where their basic needs, including food, water and shelter, are met
  • Living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves

Science Content Descriptors – Science Inquiry Skills

Questioning and predicting

  • Respond to and pose questions, and make predictions about familiar objects and events

Planning and conducting

  • Participate in guided investigations, including making observations using the senses, to explore and answer questions

Recording and processing

  • Use informal measurements in the collection and recording of observations
  • Use a range of methods, including drawings and provided tables, to sort information

Analysing and evaluating

  • Compare observations and predictions with those of others

Communicating

  • Represent and communicate observations and ideas about changes in objects and events in a variety of ways

Achievement Standards:

Science – Science Understanding

By the end of Level 2:

  • Identifies and describes examples of the external features and basic needs of living things.
  • Describes how different places meet the needs of living things.
  • Identifies and describes the changes to living things in their local environment.

Science – Science Inquiry Skills

  • Poses and responds to questions about familiar objects and events and predicts outcomes of investigations.
  • Uses their senses to explore the world around them.
  • Records informal measurements to make and compare observations.
  • Records, sorts and represents their observations.
  • Communicates their ideas to others.

Unit Title: The Animal World

Through Line: Life

Themes: Students learn how living things have basic needs, including food and water. They explore the features of living things that interest them and investigate how these things live in different places where their needs are met. Students also study how living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves.

Questions:

How do we know if something is alive?

What do animals need to stay alive?

What do living things need in order to grow and change?

What are some different types of animals that we know of?

How do we classify (sort) them?

How do animals interact?

What do animals eat?

What features help animals to survive in their habitat?

How do animals move? How does this help them survive?

What are the basic needs of humans? How do these needs compare to the needs of other animals?

Key Understandings:

All living things have basic needs

How the environment affects them and other living things

The biological needs, features, changes and habitats of different animals

How to record, sort and represent their observations
