From the Classroom

Foundation

This week it has been a celebration of completing first term with lots of Easter activities.  The Easter Multi-age Day was awesome and the Foundation children loved being with the older children.  We all need a break now to relax, recharge and return to school for Term 2 on Tuesday 26th April.  I strongly encourage to include story time in your Easter Holidays, as well as some form of pencil/paper activities. Remember, what you do at home can make a real difference to your child’s learning.

The footy season is well under away – Go Hawks!!  What a thrilling ending to last Sunday’s match.  However, Carlton defeated Hawks by 1 point after being looking like being thrashed at half time.  The Foundation boys are enjoying kicking the footy at playtimes.  If you are unaware, our school has a “no tackling” policy. This enables children to stay safe and happy during recess.  Please discuss this with your child as a gentle reminder.

Hats are not required at school for Term 2 so I will send them home on Friday.

I wish you all a very safe and happy Easter!  Looking forward to a rewarding and exciting Term 2 of learning.

Music News with Ms Sibio

For new families, I am teaching You Can Do It, Music and Student Wellbeing Support this year – say hi and ask me about these programs if you see me around!

This term we have been focusing on the element of Music – Rhythm. Students have been learning how to listen to and repeat simple and more complex rhythms as the term has progressed. They are also learning how to write rhythm notation and understanding how many beats each note is worth.

We call the notes Semibreve, Minum, Crotchet and Quaver rather than whole and half notes and so on. The students have been very responsive to this and have been working on hearing rhythms and writing them down and are demonstrating great progress with this, including the Grade 1s! We have also learned some cup games and chants – ask your child to demonstrate what they have learned in class.

You Can Do It with Ms Sibio

In YCDI in Term 1 we have focused on skills to make us successful and happy people! We have covered Time Management, Goal Setting, Growth Mindset thinking, Persistence, Organisation, Confidence and Conflict Resolution Skills. Students have been very responsive to the work they have been doing and practicing some of these skills in the classroom. They made their own calendars for March and April, so they knew what was coming up at school as well as a weekly planner. I have really enjoyed doing some role playing with them. Ask them about our cool down strategies for when things are getting challenging and perhaps you could practice the ones they remember at home during the holidays.
