Mandarin - Mr Yang

大家好! da jia hao!  Hello Everyone!

Welcome back to term 2!

In this term, we are going to learn about the following topics:

Junior

Prep

In term two, students continue to identify the features of formal language used in school contexts, such as using titles to address teachers and peers in Chinese. They learn to reproduce the four tones and recognize how they can change the meaning of the words. The students explore the functions of Pinyin, use gestures to understand the difference between the tones, and identify initials that are similar to English consonants. They also reinforce the knowledge of numbers and expand their vocabulary to familiar topics, such as family and friends.

Year 1-2

In term two, students are introduced to common characters associated with routines and their immediate experience, and draw on explicit models to communicate. By engaging in short conversations and simple sentences, students build their awareness of the sentence structure in the Chinese language. They use different sources of language input in games and teacher language to improve their comprehension of the familiar topics in our daily school life.

Middle

In term two, students continue to recognize Chinese characters as a form of writing and Pinyin as the spelled-out sounds of spoken Chinese. They identify Chinese characters from other forms of written expression and understand that each character has meaning. In the unit of food and drinks, students use learned phrases and sentence structures to express their preferences. They also learn the cultural aspects in terms of Chinese cuisine and customs around food.

Senior

In term two, students learn to use different sentence structures to express themselves in Chinese. They learn to replace words in modeled sentences to express a particular meaning and to understand the specific word order in a Chinese sentence. In the unit of countries and nationalities, students learn to describe people and languages from different countries. They engage in short conversations and learn to ask and answer simple questions about the topic.

We wish to use the new words and phrases we will learn from this term in our daily school and I am looking forward to hearing more students practising Chinese in and out of their Chinese lessons. :)

谢谢(xie xie)

Mr. Yang
