Visual Art News

Mrs Christine Larsen

In the final weeks of the 2021 school year, Year 11 student, James Beling was selected from numerous students across the state to take part in a unique three-day program in Visual Art, “In Residence”,  facilitated by the Gallery of Modern Art. The selection process was based on the submission of an artist statement and an original artwork which represented an environmental concern. James was one of 40 students shortlisted from hundreds of entries to participate in this programme, which included a series of creative making and responding workshops. The collection of artworks produced during these workshops has just been released by QAGOMA in a digital gallery. James’ work can be viewed at the following link –  https://learning.qagoma.qld.gov.au/creative-generation-in-residence-2021/

In Week 10 of last term, the Art Department hosted various Harmony Day activities which brought students from all year levels down to the Arts precinct to make their mark on our collaborative Harmony Day artworks. Activities included pavement-style chalk art in the Art courtyard and creating designs on leaves which were added to the group artwork which was developed on the doors into the Art rooms.

Also in the final week of Term 1, Year 11 Visual Art students participated in a photographic workshop with world-renowned photographer and artist, Dr Joachim Froese. Students listened to Dr Froese discuss his art practice, followed by a session which saw them create their own still-life photographs with a focus on composition and lighting.

Dr Froese will return to the College in Term 2 to judge the annual ASHCam photography competition as part of our Creative Industries week which will take place in Week 7. ASHCam is open to current students, Old Boys, teaching staff, parents and relatives of the Marist College Ashgrove community. Information on how to enter will be released in the coming weeks.

Finally, we would like to congratulate Year 9 students Van Sanders and Zach Watts, joint winners of “Artwork of the Month” for April for the paintings they produced based on the skeletal system, as part of their current unit of work, “The Human Form.”
