A Bustling Term for our Entrepreneurial Team

Term one has been an exciting and busy time for the entrepreneur team.  The weekly operation of the Coburg Collective, sports shop, sausage sizzle and the most recent house pride stall at the athletics carnival has kept our many members busy honing their skills and putting their creativity to the test.

Students have had the opportunity to create house merchandise, work shifts at the student-led cafe, operate the rent-a-ball sport shop, and take part in the back of house preparation for the Coburg Collective. These many opportunities provide our students with real-world enterprise skills that they can apply to their school community and beyond. If you want to get involved in the program next term please contact EJ:

Want to know what the students think? Check out their testimonials below:

“This term I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the Coburg Collective team, and through this, I have been able to learn leadership skills, improve my organisational habits, and have fun! I would definitely recommend to anyone from years 7-12 to join this team and see where we can go together!” - Amelie S 8E

“I’m new to CHS and have really enjoyed getting to know people in the club” - Gabriel R 7J

“Being in Year 12, sometimes my schedule can get pretty hectic, but I love spending time working in the Coburg Collective. It gives me the opportunity to learn new skills and gain experience I can apply to the workforce” - Ahmad E 12B

Debating

We had three teams in the Debater's Association of Victoria (DAV) interschool competition which kicked off with round 1 in March at Epping Secondary College. There were some fantastic debates, win or lose, and a special shout out to those who debated for the first time. Any form of public speaking can be difficult but I'm so proud of you for all giving this a go. Thanks also go to the parents and guardians of debaters who brought their students all the way out to Epping to debate.

VCE, affirmative - 'That people who are unvaccinated for COVID-19 by choice should not have access to the public health system' Kelli B, Ayesha R, and Monique C lost to the year 12 team from St Monica's College C grade, negative - 'That we should boycott major sporting events held in countries with poor human rights records' Jude T, Willow K and Violet K won against Ilim College D grade, negative - 'That sporting bodies should not accept sponsorship from gambling companies' Diego S, Alex G, and Alyia C lost against Ilim College.

Congratulations to everyone who spoke, and also to the rest of the debaters here at CHS - brainstorming ideas, practicing, and writing speeches is a whole team effort, not just the nominated speakers. The second round is the 12th of May in Week 3 of Term 2 and we'll start planning for that next term.

Robotics Club

Coburg’s Robotics Club has begun. Some very excited Year 7s have started building and programming robots, completing team building challenges and are learning about some of the requirements to compete in the First Lego League Competition. The international competition, which culminates in November, requires students to complete challenges based on the year's theme which in the past have included topics such as urbanisation, space travel and water usage.

There are two main parts to the competition, the robot game and the project. The robot game requires the team to design and program a robot to autonomously interact on a range of elements on a game board and obtain as many points as possible in two and a half minutes. The project requires teams to identify a problem based on the season’s theme and research and produce a solution to that problem.

The students are very excited and we are looking forward to seeing what they learn as the year progresses.
