Student Safety on Public Transport during School Holidays
Over the school holiday period Public Transport Victoria (PTV) and the Department would like to ensure the safety of school aged children using public transport.
Victoria Police, Authorised Officers and Transport Staff in general will be ensuring the safety of its passengers and young people, monitoring the Rail, Tram and Bus system for dangerous and disruptive behaviour.
School holiday periods generally see an escalation of vandalism, graffiti and more concerning - dangerous and life threatening activities such as coupler riding (where people ride on the outside of trains), often involving school aged children.
To ensure a safe environment for all transport users and to help prevent incidents and injuries to teenagers and young adults who make up a large percentage of passengers, PTV will:
- Conduct heightened levels of CCTV Monitoring
- Provide more Victoria Police to ride the transport system
- Support transport staff with PSO’s at most suburban Train Stations
- Deploy more Authorised Officers on trains throughout the system
- Advise their staff to report any dangerous and disruptive behaviour to Victoria Police for their dealing.
Please encourage your students to be safe while using public transport during the school holidays and report any dangerous or disruptive behaviour to staff.
