Enrichment Mathematics Program

Hugh Caton, Nathan Sewart and Luca Emmerson

Enrichment Mathematics Program

Congratulations to Luca Emmerson (Year 4), Hugh Caton (Year 5), Nathan Sewart (Year 7) and Isaac Jacobs (Year 7) who all gained High Distinctions in an Enrichment Program run by the Australian Mathematics Trust. During Terms 2 and 3 the boys worked on a series of questions from a program, and were given mentoring by Miss Frost and could work through a text based on their program. Other than this support all questions had to be worked through individually and explanations of their working was always expected. The boys were given eight very challenging questions from a range of contexts such as Logic, Geometry, Number Bases and applied Arithmetic problems.

Luca completed the Ramunajan Program with a perfect score in all eight questions, Hugh completed the Dirichlet Program and almost scored perfectly with 31/32. Nathan and Isaac completed the Newton Program and both gained perfect scores.

An example of what questions were asked is given below.

Ramanujan Program (Year 4)

You are making a recipe that requires three cups of flour. You have a very large bag of flour, but unfortunately you only have containers which can measure exactly five cups and nine cups.

Explain how to measure out exactly three cups of flour, using only the two containers and the bag of flour.

Dirichlet Program (Year 5)

Every digit in a number is six. Find the maximum number of sixes in the number if the sum of the digits in its square is at most 2018. Justify your answer.

Newton Program (Year 7)

Use divisibility tests to find all possible digits x and y, if any, so that 693 divides the 8-digit number x956543y.
