What's Happening in Music

The Junior Concert Band and St Bede’s College and Kilbreda College Wind Symphony have recently performed at the Victorian Schools Music Festival at Hawthorn Arts Centre and Deakin Edge theatre respectively.  This massive annual festival includes performances from hundreds of Australian and international school bands.  Both of our bands presented musically challenging works and it was great to hear the development of both ensembles over the time that we had spent on preparing these programs.  Well done students and particular thanks to Ms Alison Bellew (junior band) and Mr John Beckley (Wind Symphony) who co–conducted these ensembles.

I am very proud of the enthusiastic approach that the students adopt towards their participation in music, but I am also aware that even greater fulfilment occurs when ongoing progress is being made.  In order to assist in this process the Music Department at the College is introducing a program called the LIVE PRACTICE JOURNAL.  Key features of the journal include:

• Students record themselves, on a minimum of two days, as they complete set practice tasks at home. Students will use their laptop/ iPad to complete these recordings/videos.
• In the subsequent lesson, the teacher will review the recordings and provide feedback to the student. Students must ensure that they bring their ICT device to each lesson.

We hope that the Live Practice Journal, will allow students and staff to more effectively monitor progress and that the nominated work is being completed between instrumental/vocal lessons.  I would hope that parents can be involved in this process by encouraging their sons to complete the minimum of two sessions per week.

West Side Story

As you would be aware, the fantastic musical production of West Side Story is being presented by the College now. Best wishes to the large number of music students who are involved in these performances. (See "News" on the College website for ticketing details.)
