College Production of West Side Story

West Side Story: The Musical
St Bede’s College, in association with Kilbreda College and Mentone Girls’ Grammar School presents West Side Story the Musical! This energetic, widely-acclaimed, melodramatic musical is an adaptation of a modern-day, loose re-telling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet tragedy of feuding families, although the setting is the Upper West Side of New York City with conflict between rival street gangs rather than families.
West Side Story transports its audiences to 1950s New York City, as two young idealistic lovers Maria, played by Emma Trumble and Tony, played by Jack Erbacher, find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.
The College embraces a student learning culture where excellence in the Arts is encouraged. By presenting works such as West Side Story students are able to experience, through performance, complex relationships, tolerance and conflict on stage. Student relationships are the cornerstone of learning at St Bede’s College and by addressing the issues that the characters face in the script, students can reflect upon their own relationships and learn the value of respecting others.
