Deputy Principals' Message

Pedestrian Safety for Students at St Bede's College

The safety of our students is paramount.  In recent years a number of reports have been made regarding increased traffic congestion on the College property both before and after school.

Students driving to school are not permitted to drive on the College property. They are asked to obtain a car pass for the Mentone RSL carpark when they complete their Permission to Drive Form.

PARENTS ARE ASKED NOT To drive onto the College Property to:

(1)     Drop off

           or

(2)     Pick-up their sons before or after school.

Please negotiate with your son to meet you at a designated place on either Dixon Street, Naples Road or Palermo Street.

On some occasions traffic congestion is significant due to the number of schools in the immediate area.  With planned rail crossing works and the redesign of traffic flow in Mentone, this is unlikely to improve in the short term.  This, no doubt, will lead to an increase in the number of frustrated drivers during peak hours.

We ask that perhaps students look at the options of riding a bike, walking or catching public transport to school. Those families who drive their son may consider he disembark a short distance from the College and walk some  of the way to help reduce the congestion and the risk.  Most of the surrounding streets in the area have supervised crossing areas. Students are encouraged to use traffic light pedestrian crossings and supervised school crossings at all times.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Appearance Matters!

As we are now well into Term 3 we remind parents and students that full winter uniform is required to be worn to and from the College each day.  Some of the main issues regarding uniform are:

  • BLAZER:
  • A College blazer and correct College tie MUST be worn every day in Terms 2 and 3. Tracksuit tops cannot be worn in its place.
  • SHOES:
  • Black leather school shoes are required. These must be maintained. There are a number of students wearing shoes being held together with tape or wearing runners or slip-on material shoes - these are not acceptable.
  • KEEPING WARM:
  • On cold days we recommend students wear an appropriate under-garment (under their shirt) and the College Jumper, College blazer and or Rainjacket. Hooded tops are NOT part of the uniform.

Should families have financial reasons for not being able to purchase part of the uniform please contact Mr Luke Green Years 7 – 9 or Mr Mark Jones Years 10 – 12.

In addition to wearing the correct uniform we need to remind parents that we require students to keep a neat and tidy appearance.  Students are to be cleanly shaven and their hair is to be kept clean, well maintained and at a reasonable length.  Under no circumstances can facial jewellery be worn with the College uniform. Earrings, eyebrow rings and various lip piercing decorations will be confiscated.

Despite numerous requests we do find that some students have real trouble wearing the College uniform in the correct manner.  It is unfortunate, but students who fail to wear the correct uniform will be asked to attend a uniform detention.  We expect parent support in this matter.
