AUSTRALIAN DYSLEXIA ASSOCIATION
This week we had a visit from Kate Finnie from the Australian Dyslexia Association (ADA). Kate presented certificates to our staff members who have completed the Multisensory Structured Learning (MSL) course through the Institute of Multisensory Structured Language Education (IMSLE).
We were also very excited to receive a Certificate of Excellence from the ADA acknowledging that we have had 10 staff members complete the course and that we are now a Dyslexia Aware School.
We are the first school to achieve a Certificate of Excellence which is a wonderful acknowledgement of the dedication of our staff at Wheelers Hill.
The MSL course comprises a very intensive 5 day training program, the analysis and reflections of 15 readings and the tutoring of an individual student for 45 hours. As you can see to achieve this our teachers have dedicated huge amounts of time to ensuring we are implementing best practices in improving student outcomes for your children.
We also have 5 Wheelers Hill Primary parents who have been inspired by our teachers who are now in the process of completing their course. This too, is a wonderful testament to the great work being done at Wheelers Hill.
MAKER GRANT
Nathan Stockton, our ICT Learning Specialist, and I were very excited to learn that we were successful in our submission of a Makers Grant.
The Maker Space at Wheelers Hill Primary School will be established to showcase digital teaching and learning resources aimed at increasing the technological skills of our junior school students in particular.
Our initial goals are:
- to purchase some Robot Coding Kits which will allow our junior school students to create and program robots in a way that is both practical and relevant to their learning age.
- to invest in some STEAM Sets which will further allow our students to develop their abilities to create and invent simple electronic systems.
This Maker Space will be used during school sessions where our ICT Learning Specialist teacher works alongside classroom teachers across the school, coaching and modelling to enhance the Digital Technologies curriculum.
