Learning and Teaching

STEAM...or STREAM!

What is STEAM or STREAM? STREAM stands for Science, Technology and Engineering, interpreted through Religion and the Arts, conveyed through Writing, Reading and Speaking, all based in the elements of Mathematics.

STREAM gives us a visual description of flowing water. In the classroom STREAM is the flow of ideas over and across several learning areas. STREAM programs encourage a constant flow of communication, collaboration and planning among teachers, school staff, students, parents and parish.

Last Wednesday, staff met to engage in planning and professional learning around STREAM. As a staff, we want the children of Galilee to leave school being: creative, curious, critical thinkers, collaborators, persistent, researchers, self directed learners. With that in mind, we will be moving to having a "Big Idea" topic that will allow cross-curricular links during learning. The Big Idea for Term 2 will be: Sustainability

Sustainability focuses on protecting natural environments and creating an ecologically and socially just world, through action. Learning around this area develops capabilities and skills such as: critical thinking, reflection, evaluation, optimism, hope, resilience and a stronger connection to nature and the world around them.

Please let us know if you have a background or interest in this area. We would love support from the school community.

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)

Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital- The Year 6 Camp to Canberra. Students where given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Please note that the rebate of $30 was already deducted from the cost of the camp that was advertised to our Year 6 families.
