Grade 5 Snapshot - Term 4/Week 2-3

Writing

Students have enjoyed using picture prompts to plan, draft, revise and edit a narrative this week. Next week students will be moving onto the next Trait from the 6+1 Traits of Writing - WORD CHOICE. Word Choice is  more than just using words, it is about using 'rich, colourful, precise language'  to move and enlighten the reader. They will learn how Word Choice links into The Writing Process.

Reading

This week students have continued their focus on Thinking Beyond the Text. They used the strategy of inferring to think about the theme or message in picture story books.

We have enjoyed running our Guided Reading lessons in person. This week students have each had a time to meet with their teacher in a small group to focus on the strategies and skills they need to develop as readers.

Guided Reading sessions will continue next week and as the Term goes on student groups will be fluid and change based on point of need.

Next week, as students begin exploring word choice in writing, they will focus on identifying and interpreting figurative language in different texts.

Maths

This week back at school, students have been working through a series of money and financial Mathematics problem solving tasks. Students have also been working on creating simple budgets. Next week students will learn how to identify and calculate the GST component on receipts and invoices. As Market Day is not possible this term, students will instead design a hypothetical product they could make and calculate the associated sales, costs and profit.

Unit of Inquiry

This week students have been learning about processes involved in the production of goods and the impact these productions can have on the environment. Taking their understanding of the environmental impacts that the production of goods can have, students are rewriting The Lorax from an environmentally responsible perspective.

Next week will be assessment week for ‘How We Express Ourselves’ unit of inquiry. Students will be preparing a presentation to demonstrate their understanding of the relationship between economics, society and the environment. They will propose a revised business plan for the production of Thneeds focusing on eliminating the negative social and environmental effects as described in the story of The Lorax along with plans for the preservation of the last Truffla seed.

Wellbeing - Zones Of Regulation

This week students are working on My LIKES and DISLIKES!

As students start thinking about returning to school - the classroom - specialist classes - the playground, they will think back to what it felt like when they were learning in an environment with friends around them!

Next week students will be learning about when it’s EXPECTED to be in a ZONE.

All of the ZONES are okay. There are times when one should be in a different ZONE!

In the classroom, we try to stay in the GREEN Zone.

They will think about times when it’s EXPECTED that one would be in the YELLOW, BLUE or even the RED Zone. This will affect how we LEARN.
