Grade 2 Home Learning Snapshot

Term 3, Week 7

Home Learning Updates

Dear parents,

Welcome to Week 7 of Home Learning! We are commencing our next unit of inquiry this week and changing our focuses for all subject areas.

We have some pre-assessments scheduled for reading, writing and maths this week. It is important that the students work independently to show us what they know and so we can tailor our lessons accordingly. We will not necessarily term the tasks as "assessment" with the students. Rather, we will let them know that their independent work will help us know what to teach them. It's okay if they don't know it yet or if they have a go and get it wrong, because this content has not yet been taught. We would greatly appreciate it if you could encourage them in this way too.

Writing

Students will be independently writing a narrative as well as a recount this week. Students will also learn to write according to a person’s perspective. They will write a recount in the first person then change it to the third person. Students will have choice of topic.

Reading

This week in reading, students will begin looking at fiction texts. On Monday the students will be asked to organise their fiction books into different genres. We would like to see their thinking and how they decide to classify their books. On Tuesday the students pick one of their favourite stories to retell. On Thursday and Friday we will be analysing texts written in first and third person, which will connect with their writing tasks.

Word Study

Students will continue to practise the codes and we are continuing to work on Rule 4 and 5. We are aiming for students to be able to explain the rule and identify when a vowel will say its second sound, based on its position in a syllable.

Maths

We are starting the concept of multiplication this week. The students need to complete a simple pre-assessment on Monday. On Tuesday they will need to complete a multiplication test on Essential Assessment. Students will need to complete these tasks independently. It is okay if they don’t know how to answer the questions or get it incorrect. The information we receive will help teachers understand how they can help your child.

During the second half of the week the student will learn a new game called Land Grab. This will develop their understanding of arrays and multiplication. It will also build on their understanding of measuring area.

Unit of Inquiry

It was great to see the creativity and care put into students dioramas last week as well as their information texts the previous week.

This week we will commence our 5th unit of inquiry, which is our How We Express Ourselves unit. The Central Idea is "Learning about cultural practices can support and connect communities." We are inquiring into cultural practices, how people's beliefs and values are expressed through celebrations and traditions and the attributes of a Global Citizen. We will have a few provocations this week and encourage students and families to begin to think about their own values and how they express these.

Wellbeing

This week the whole school is having a Wellbeing Day on Wednesday. The school community has come together to offer some great activities that will allow the school community a chance to refresh ourselves for the rest of term.
