School of Foundations

Our goal in the School of Foundations this year is for students to be able to interpret and apply appropriate vocabulary when speaking, reading and writing. During term 3 we commenced some focused work on developing student reading skills, specifically developing new vocabulary during reading experiences.

By developing vocabulary students are able to understand more fully what they are reading. With teachers actively engaging in this work, our student reading levels and self correction rates when students are reading have increased. When we gauge how reading is progressing, students are placed onto reading levels. It is important to note that all students are developing their skills in reading and the level itself is not as important as the skills.

One of the main indicators of reading success is the ability to self-correct when reading (knowing when a word is not right and correcting this using the various reading strategies). We are delighted to share the students amazing reading results with you below. The pie graphs indicate how our students have progressively built up their skills in being able to self-correct when reading.
