Assistant to the Principal - Faith and Mission

In my privileged role at Marian College, I have the pleasure of working with the Student Liturgy Captains. Even though it has been a most unusual year, I believe the team has achieved some truly wonderful outcomes. They have written a reflection of their time in the position.

My name is Jessica Phung and I am one of the Co-Captains of the Liturgy Group at Marian College. My journey of being a leader began in Year 11, towards the end of Term 2, during one of my Ethics classes with Mr Mc Inerney. He suggested to me that I should consider taking on a role in Liturgy Team. At that time I was thinking ‘oh how nice I always wanted to be a Captain’ and I thought it’s just a Captain; I don’t have to do much work.

However when this year started and I had to start organising Masses and Assemblies I realised that being a Captain is not as easy as it looks. There are many things that need to be done beforehand in-order for a Mass run smoothly. We needed to be involved in meetings during recess and lunch to come up with ideas, construct prayers and invite guests. I soon realized that no major event is the same as the last. After a year of being Liturgy Captain I learnt that being a Captain is not easy at all, in fact at this stage I still do not know if I am a good leader. Being a leader requires a lot of teamwork and good listening skills, cooperating with my fellow captains and ensuring that we are all on the same page with Mr Mc Inerney Although my journey as a Liturgy Captain is coming to an end I want to let everyone know that being a Captain has taught me many life skills that will benefit me in the future and even though this is a hard a stressful role to take if I had the chance I would like to do it again.

Despite the circumstances of this year, nothing has been better than the bond between the other Co-Captains, Jessica and Catelin, and being able to work and achieve all the possibilities of the events this year. It has been wonderful to work with all of the Social Justice groups. Having the opportunity to represent the College in ways we didn’t think were possible has been very memorable and I could never fully thank those who have been involved to make these events happen. Holding a leadership role this year has taught me many valuable things such as time management, the importance of collating ideas and especially appreciating teamwork. One of the most memorable events that had occurred during my time of my captaincy had been the leadership camp in November. Participating in the Marian Student Leadership team camp enabled us to plan for the upcoming year. This was done through the participation in a range of activities that had required us to combine ideas and strengthen the relationship between one another.

I have appreciated every single second of my time being a Captain! I would really like to encourage the younger year levels to get involved with the school community by being a part of the leadership team because despite the hurricane of stress, the bond between both the students and teachers really shine through and can overcome anything!

I was fortunate to be working alongside with Stacey and Jess as one of the Captains for the Liturgy Group 2020. They have been great people to work with. Considering the circumstances dealt with this year, such as remote learning because of COVID-19, I believe we have achieved a lot. We stayed positive and continued to provide prayer remotely for the rest of the Marian College community. The number of opportunities this leadership position has allowed me to obtain me is beyond belief. With great pleasure and gratitude to the two other Captains, I have really enjoyed the role and I know for a fact that I am going to miss being involved in such a worthy position.
