Environmental Club Update

On Thursday 17 September, six students from Years 9-12, Ms Scott, and myself attended the 2020 Virtual Climate Conference hosted by Melbourne Girls’ College. Over 200 students from across 30 schools around Australia participated in this event via Zoom and STREAMYARD. Throughout the Conference, we also collaborated in various workshops via Padlet and Google docs.

The Conference featured multiple Australian guest speakers from diverse industry backgrounds who discussed key knowledge and concepts about climate change. Guest speakers included Giles Parkinson, founder and editor of RenewEconomy, who explored the potential effects of climate change on the economy. Damon Gameau, award-winning director (That Sugar Film), spoke about his documentary “2040” and why it is important to act now on climate change,  and Samantha Green from The Yarra Council, who discussed issues about the local environment. After the presentations from the guest speakers, students and staff from all the schools shared green ideas that could be implemented when we are back at school.

The students, who attended the Conference, our Environment Club members, and our VCE Environmental Science students, all look forward to sharing their ideas with the Marian community.
