Literacy and Numeracy

Please watch our video about Literacy and Numeracy in Kindergarten

Literacy

In Kindergarten students are involved in Reading, Writing and Talking and Listening. At Fairvale we use the differentiated literacy program to provide literacy experiences through explicit teaching. Students engage in reading and writing lessons in small groups, meeting each students specific learning needs. Teachers will read with students on a daily basis using their guided reading books and a range of quality texts. Drawing pictures is an important part of the writing process in Kindergarten. We begin writing as soon as students start school working on writing their letters correctly and how to hold a pencil.

Numeracy

Numeracy in Kindergarten involves the use of a range of different materials, like counters, pegs, dice and cards, to help students build an understanding of numbers. Through out the year students will learn about creating patterns, measuring objects and different types of shapes.
