Level 3/4
What another fabulous few weeks it’s been in Level 3 and 4. Have a look at some of the exciting things we have been up to!
Boat building
After working through the design process to design and then create our own floating boats, we have finally been able to put our designs to the test. Some boats floated, some boats carried large amounts of money and it was great to be able to reflect on our successes and what we might do differently if we were to repeat the process. We look forward to sharing these results with you as part of our Term 4 portfolios.
Year 3/4 Sport
Despite a few rainy afternoons, it has been wonderful to have Year 3/4 Sport back on Friday afternoons. We are rotating between different activities each week to practise game-based skills and good sportsmanship which will help as we head into senior school and interschool sports. It’s been fantastic to see students from levels 3 and 4 working together in their teams and making new friendships.
Polly Woodside and Immigration Museum excursion
On Wednesday the 9th of November Level 3 students ventured into the city to attend the Polly Woodside and Immigration Museum excursion. The Polly Woodside was a highlight for many of our students, as they were able to explore a real tall ship and see firsthand what life aboard the ship would have been like. They were shocked at how small the beds were and were able to participate in activities such as scrubbing the deck and watching a dramatic re-enactment of the journey of the Polly Woodside. The Immigration Museum allowed students to see the various waves of immigration that Australia has seen over the years, and many students were able to make connections to the exhibits and artefacts.
On Thursday 17th November, most of the Year 4s attended the Polly Woodside and Immigration Museum excursion. It was a fabulous excursion that gave us great insight into what life was like for explorers on ships sailing the seas in search of new lands, as well as what life was like for immigrants moving to Australia. We loved connecting some of the things we saw to what we are reading about in ‘The Goat that Sailed the World’ and to what we have been learning about in our inquiry unit this term.
Classroom learning
In Mathematics, Level 3 students have been developing written methods for solving problems involving addition, subtraction and multiplication. It’s been great to see students using different strategies to solve problems, as well as being introduced to vertical subtraction and addition. Level 4 students have also been working on revising written strategies for the four operations, as well as collecting and presenting data. They are beginning to look at money and budgeting in preparation for their Fish and Chip lunch coming up in a few weeks.
In Writing, Level 3 students have been exploring biographies and developing their abilities to research and organise their information on a ‘Lotus Diagram’. They have also examined some of Aesop’s Fables and had a go at writing their own. Level 4 students have finished up their persuasive writing and speaking unit. Students had a wonderful time with the Toastmasters visiting to help develop their persuasive speaking skills, and a big congratulations to Nina for winning the public speaking competition at Mt Pleasant Rd Primary School for Level 3 & 4 students. They are now moving onto narrative writing and are enjoying using creativity to write some free choice writing pieces.
In Reading, Level 3 students have been continuing their work on identifying the author’s purpose for a variety of texts. The focus Level 4 students have been on interpreting figurative language, and they have enjoyed looking at language devices such as similes, metaphors and personification. Students have also been learning how to use quotation marks and how to use different tenses as part of our grammar focus. We are now moving onto looking at identifying the author’s purpose in different texts. We are still enjoying reading ‘The Goat Who Sailed the World’ and applying many of our comprehension strategies to this text.
