Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education

Sharing Knowledge Program
On Tuesday November 15, four Year 3 and 4 students attended the Sharing Knowledge Program at Wollongong Art Gallery. There, they explored the many artworks and artefacts in the gallery created by First Nations Peoples. They also joined award winning Gunai author and artist, Kirli Saunders for a creative connection to Country. Alirah C, Sienna P, Hunter S and Billy W learned about Kirli's creative practice and created visual poems where they experimented with a range of mediums, including cyanotypes (sun prints), poetic collages and painting. It was an absolutely wonderful experience for all the students involved!

Aboriginal Perspectives in Stage 2
3/4C
This week 3/4C are learning about questioning in Focus on Reading. We learnt to question before, during and after reading. We used the book Cathy Freeman, Born to Run. This created some great questioning from the class, and we also watched Cathy Freeman's 400m Olympic Race which we read about in the book.
3/4H
This week saw our class (3/4H) practice our Whole Number skills using teamwork, critical and creative thinking and using items from Country to represent number on our wonderful school playground. 3/4H loved trading the worksheets for the hands-on materials and cannot wait to try more fun and educational things utilising Country!
3/4T
This term, 3/4T have been studying the Science unit, ‘Contact and non-contact forces’. Examples of forces include pushes, pulls, friction, gravity and magnetism. We have looked at how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples used tools to apply force to objects. One tool is called the woomera (Dharug language) which is used to apply more force when throwing a spear.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples also used fire sticks and friction force to make fire and boomerangs to push against air friction force.
