Community Engagement Program

Fostering school connection and wellbeing for all students and parents

Pasifika and African Student Clubs

Well done to the Pasifika and African Student Clubs who have been running weekly sessions to engage the students through youth leadership capacity and peer mentoring support. The Pasifika STARR program which has been running on Wednesdays from 2:30pm – 3:30pm for Year 7 and 8 students help students to connect culturally with Liaisons mentors and peers of Pasifika heritage.  Students have been using cultural reflections to understand how to utilise the MSC STARR values in their everyday high school experience. Pasifika Liaison Officers welcome suggestions from staff for student participation in the Pasifika STARR program’s Term 3 intake.

In contrast to the Pasifika program, the African Student Club has been an avenue for many students of African heritages and different cultural backgrounds to connect. Many of the African students and their friends have been learning traditional dances from the different cultural groups within Africa, watched a documentary, formed some goals for the year and made new friends. Akuol A has incorporated important discussions in and amongst the fun.  Coming up for the rest of the term we will be cooking traditional African food, celebrating Refugee Week and having some special guests come into school to share their stories.

Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre - Parenting in a New Culture (PINC)

MSC has worked closely with Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre for a number of years incorporating parent engagement and support programs to families who have experienced stressful situations. They provide programs such as PINC which assists parents in managing intergenerational and cultural issues, while providing strategies to support positive relationships with their children and managing their behaviour in a new cultural setting.
