Wellbeing

Ms Deb Haddow

Can you believe we are in term 2 already? Classrooms are vibrant and energised with so many great things happening.

THRIVE is everywhere—in the diaries, in the curriculum and in the yard. Sarah Roney, our network leader has been visiting classes and running sessions. Some year levels are organising THRIVE ‘Days’ to ensure the essential wellbeing curriculum is covered. Our term 2 curriculum centres around TRY YOUR BEST and BE HEALTHY. There are weekly goals in the diaries that the teachers connect with, and curriculum lessons.  Our curriculum content this term covers:

The THRIVE awards are also based on these values. The weekly goal in the THRIVE diary is used as a focus for particular behaviours we would like to see for that week. It is discussed in class, in year level assemblies and whole school assemblies. Teachers use our Whole School Behaviour Continuum (class chart) to identify students showing the behaviours or strategies identified as a focus for the week. These names are used when awards are being determined for any of the assemblies.

At our last assembly, these students were chosen for awards:

6Flynn SRelate Well - For going out of his way in class to ensure everyone is included and understanding people’s differences.

Bella our Therapy Dog is such an asset to our school. Students in Mrs Hamilton’s art class are now very comfortable with her being a part of their class. Bella has managed this so well, we have expanded her program this term. She’s been visiting the staffroom and also greeting students in the morning. She’s often near gate 2 and students know to approach her quietly and calmly to say hello. They remind each other that only 3 people can be in her personal space at any time. Bella has helped to walk some anxious students to class and get them settled with their work.  She certainly sleeps well after her days at school.

Our Classroom Helpers Training Program has started. Mrs Gilchrist prepared learning about our new literacy programs and the best strategies to help students with their reading. The Child safe component was incorporated through the Google form that needed to be completed. Working With Children Checks and Triple Vaccination Status need to be shown at the office. Class teachers will organise rosters soon to fit in with your availability.

Our Inclusion Mentors continue to unpack the Berry Street Education Model with our students. This program helps students to identify their emotions and build some self regulation with their emotions. The welcoming circle each morning gives teachers a good chance to check in with their students on their wellbeing daily. Our ‘Ready To Learn’ strategies are helping teachers identify students that might need additional emotional support to focus on the learning, or a chat to help them ‘turn their day around’ to a more positive one.

Our additional SRC students were elected and awarded their badges at our last assembly. Congratulations to these students. Our VALUES team will organise events and fundraisers. Our Health Ambassadors have focussed on having pride in our yard.
