Teaching & Learning 3V

Time seems to be flying this term! In 3V, we have often reflected on the fact that this year to date has been the longest consecutive time spent in the classroom since completing Prep at the end of 2019 – something to cherish and be grateful for.

Maths

We have learned a lot this year, but most recently we have been exploring measurement with a specific focus on length. As well as learning about different units of measurement, students have had a blast sizing things up around the classroom. A particular highlight was finding as many creative things as possible within the room with an estimated one-centimetre length; some of our more interesting discoveries included:

  • The width of a tassel on Mrs Vancea’s cushion
  • The thickness of an ice-pack sponge
  • A random bit of bark that was on the floor
  • The number ‘24’ on one of our display posters
  • The switch on the electrical outlet

Weekly Wonder

Recently, when reflecting upon a text we’d read and responded to, a student had a very interesting question – if it rains fresh water, then why and how are oceans salty? From this single question was born a new weekly feature in our class: 3V’s Weekly Wonder! Students came up with a range of questions and ponderings that either Mrs Vancea researches and finds answers to, or we can call upon classmates who might have an answer for us.

So far, we have looked at the fascinating process of how hard lollies are made, why February only has 28 days in the month, and explored the salinity of the seas. Still to come are looking at the history of Olympic swimming, how schools were ‘invented’, the ‘invention’ of food, and many, many more (… probably inventions).
