Reconciliation Week
New - Reconciliation Week
On Friday 27th May, our students were involved in learning ways they can reconcile the hurts that aboriginal people feel due to the actions of the past governments. They learnt about significant dates where aboriginal leaders shared the wrongs of the past that have led up to the yearly week we now know as Reconciliation Week.
During the week, children listened to various stories, learnt about William Cooper and other local elders who have worked tirelessly to take action for a better way of life for aboriginal people and the children created various artwork.
This Friday, 3rd June, we have a Reconciliation Breakfast for all of our Indigenous families, our F.I.R.E Carriers and staff at 8 am in the Marian Centre and Mrs Dyke will share her recent immersion trip to Lake Mungo.
All our children are encouraged to wear something red, yellow or black on Friday 3rd June. At 1 pm the whole school will participate in a Reconciliation Rally. We invite all our families to walk with us. We will meet in the Church carpark at 1 pm and walk along the footpath out the front of school along the McLennan Street Service Road, up Emma Street and back into the school oval.
New - Sorry Day Liturgy
On Thursday 26th May the whole school participated in a Sorry Day Liturgy in the Marian Centre. Many of our indigenous students sang in our choir and the F.I.R.E Carriers shared with us about what Sorry Day means and the significance it plays today in the reconciliation practices we do at school, such as saying acknowledgement to country, learning Yorta Yorta language, listening to stories that tell the truth about Aboriginal history and the importance of country. We thank Kane Atkinson (Ruby Atkinson’s dad 3/4NP) for doing a smoking ceremony to start our liturgy. It was a very moving service to begin our Sorry Day activities.
New - Sorry Day Commemorative Service in Shepparton
The F.I.R.E Carriers attended the Shepparton Sorry Day Commemorative Service at Monash Park on Thursday 26th of May. This service was to commemorate National Sorry Day.
The students participated in a smoking ceremony and listened to Aunty Ella Anselmi (Riley Atkinson’s grandmother 1/2 CD) about her own family’s experiences of the government removal policy. Aunty Ella spoke of her two brothers being taken away by the authorities when her family were living at The Flats. It was a moving story that challenges us to always remember those children who where taken away from their families, some of whom were never reunited. Various schools in the area were also in attendance. Students spoke about the significant dates that lead to the Government report into the Stolen Generation – Bringing Them Home Report. Our students each placed a cut out handprint beside other student’s to symbolize the hurt and pain suffered by many in our community.
