Year 4 Planetarium Excursion

By Winter, Student in 4B

Hello! You may have heard that Year 4 classes went to Science works and I can confirm this is most definitely true. But don’t worry, I’ll give you the details.

After we arrived, we had some lunch and (excitedly) headed straight to the Planetarium! If you are unaware of what this is, it’s a highlight of Scienceworks itself. Well, it’s a large dome placed in Scienceworks, in which you lie down, look up, and watch in. It creates an atmosphere that feels like you’re really there. And so, we lay down and watched. And after watching a 45-minute-long movie, we learned about the stars as well as a fun bonus!

Wow… so many stars!

We had a quick refresher and in fact, had some free time to roam around Scienceworks. There were so many incredible things that I did and learned, such as:

  • Raced against Cathy Freeman
  • Powered a skeleton
  • Designed a car
  • and so much more!

Finally, we had a lesson about the distances between the sun, moon, and earth. As well as how seasons work and day and night too. This taught me so much in just an hour. And I loved the fact they made us guess which one of the props would be the scale of Earth (shrunk down) compared to if the sun was a Yoga ball, and we could choose either basketball, bouncy ball, or tennis ball, marble, or a TINY marble. And in fact, it was the tiny marble. Which was shocking and blew my mind for sure, soon after we headed back for the end of the day.
