Dear Members of the Academy Community,

Last week, Deputy Principal, Ms Fiona Lennon and I were privileged to attend the VCE Drama performances which took place in the Drama Studio at the Academy.  There were two performances – Year 11 Drama class performance, followed by the Year 12 students.  Both performances were quite magnificent, showcasing the depth of talent of our students but also bringing to mind the important topic of feminism.

Many thanks to Performing Arts Learning Leader and Drama teacher, Ms Olivia Hamilton.  Ms Hamilton is also the Director of our forthcoming musical – FAME Jr, so it has been an extremely busy time for her of late.

Speaking of the musical, excitement is building as our much anticipated College musical FAME Jr draws near.  Rehearsals have been taking place, ensuring that the College is a hive of activity during the weekends.  Despite putting on extra performances this year, tickets are virtually sold out.  A very big thank you to Ms Olivia Hamilton and Ms Mirelle Morris, Musical Director, for all of their hard work putting this production together.  Thank you to the many students who have rehearsed on Monday evenings and on Sundays for the last few months.

A reminder that we only have a few tickets left, so if you have not booked, I strongly encourage you to do so!

On another note, it was pleasing to see that the online Years 7 & 9 NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) program ran smoothly with no technical difficulties. The results of the tests provide diagnostic information for parents and teachers about students’ performance in Literacy and Numeracy. The testing is one of a myriad of ways your daughter is assessed. The NAPLAN testing represents a specific form of testing that sits alongside the wide range of College assessment strategies and needs to be viewed in this way.

Congratulations to our Senior Student Leadership Team, and, in particular, to College Captain, Ruby Hoare, who are encouraging students to undertake 165 acts of Mercy for this, our 165th year.  This is a wonderful initiative and speaks to the heart of what is important for all of us as women and men of Mercy. Hopefully, we will have achieved 165 acts of Mercy by the end of Term 2.

There is a reminder on the important dates page for parents who currently have a daughter in Grade 5. If you wish to enrol your daughter for Year 7, 2024  the closing date for applications is 19 August 2022. It may seem far away but this date will be here before you know it.  Please ensure you enrol your daughter prior to this date.

Every blessing,

Sr Mary Moloney rsm
