MEDIEVAL DAY

Yr 8 Humanities

Early May all of the Year 8s participated in Medieval Day. In Humanities over the course of last term, we learnt about the history and life in the Middle Ages. Medieval Day was a great way to increase and solidify our knowledge and have some fun.

The day started in the Hall where we were divided into our class groups.  Mr Tomassini explained the day to us and we split into groups and began our first activity.

First activity

Once we were split into different rooms and met our instructors, the fun began. The first activity was costumes, people from the group were chosen to display a medieval costume from a different time. Then we started to learn about who wore these clothes, why they wore them, and why they were/weren’t practical. We also got to look at the clothes from oldest to most recent, see the difference in the materials and learn why some materials were used in certain times and others not. This was a very interactive activity for the students, and learning about the costumes wasn’t only educational but fun.

Second activity

The second activity was archery. We got to learn about the ways that people in the middle ages used archery to hunt and how this evolved through the years. We also got to learn how to shoot our own arrows, acting out scenes that would have really happened in these times. This activity was very popular among the students as many enjoyed the activity.

Third activity

The third activity was all about the seasons, life conditions and the way people interacted in the middle ages. We got to learn about the small houses that housed large families becoming inconvenient during the winter when it was physically too cold to venture outside for entertainment or space. We also talked about the ways in which people showed respect to lords during the middle ages and took part in some games and dances that the people of the middle ages would have participated in.

Fourth activity

The final activity was fighting and knights. In this session, we got the privilege to learn about knights, their training and some skills they used when it came to combat. Not only did we learn heaps about the hardship the knights used to go through in training, we had to take part in some of them ourselves. Near the end, we got to use the skills we had just learnt to swing the wooden combat weapons at our instructor (who was wearing knight armour.) This activity was a lot of fun as well as having a very good educational aspect.

Overall, the Medieval Day was a fun day where we took part in multiple activities and experiences. It was very hands-on, and a great way to solidify our existing knowledge on medieval times.

WORLD BEE DAY

MRC

20 May is World Bee Day that celebrates the hard-working little pollinators. In the MRC we are helping to raise awareness of the importance of bees.  Ms Salvo has created a fabulous display and books all about bees are available for the students to find out more.

The purpose of the International Day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem.  We all need bees!!
