Theatre Studies

Units 3 & 4 Theatre Studies is a VCE subject that asks students to interpret, analyse and evaluate theatre in different ways. This subject culminates in two important exams, the monologue performance exam and the written exam. Students who achieve outstanding marks in their performance exam are invited to perform at the Arts Centre Melbourne in a program called Top Class.

The monologue exam asks students to creatively interpret a prescribed text in either acting/directing or a in two design areas for 8 minutes.

At Nossal, Units 3 & 4 Theatre Studies has been running since 2020. In its second year, students Gabrielle Rota (Class of 2021) and Milagros Vargas (Class of 2022) will have the opportunity to perform their outstanding monologues at Top Class Theatre Studies 2022 on March 28 and 29 2022. This achievement is a first for Nossal High School to be selected for this prestigious opportunity and it is not an easy accolade to receive. About 1000 students undertake Theatre Studies in the state, about 50-60 are invited to audition for top acts and only the top 24 performances are selected for this opportunity.

The two students also managed to perfect and refine their performances in the face of remote learning and limited rehearsal time at school in the lead up to the performance exam.

Gabrielle Rota interpreted the monologue of Double from the play Lake Disappointment. The play is a psycho-thriller one-man show that explores the life and thoughts of a stunt double.

Milagros Vargas interpreted the monologue of Lettice from the play Lettice & Lovage. The play explores the unlikely friendship between two middle aged women Lettice and Lotte. The character of Lettice is a larger than life character who occasionally likes to colour history to engage her audiences.

These performances will be available to

stream in April and I can’t wait to share their performances with you later in 2022.
