NEST News

NEST Club

With the commencement of the school year, NEST would like to take this opportunity to invite any new Year 9s as well as those in other year levels who are interested but have not yet officially joined NEST. Club sign ups are rapidly approaching and before the time to decide comes, we wanted to provide some extra details to inform and hopefully interest students to get involved.

NEST stands for Nossal Environment and Sustainability Team and the purpose of this club is to provide a space for students to come together to educate and inspire one another on how important it is to implement social or environmental strategies to "sustain the world" - or briefly, it is a club to learn more about the environment and how people can play a role in sustaining it. NEST is split into four major groups: Green Team, Events Team, ResourceSmart Team and Waste Management Team.

Green Team works on the gardening and planting segment of the club - this involves planning and taking part in Tree Planting Day, and any other planting incentives around the school. A very interesting project currently being worked on that may interest you is the Nossal Indigenous Garden project. Nossal was lucky enough to win a grant that would support the building of this garden!

The Events Team works on, as the name reveals, planning and carrying out major events that run throughout the year although predominantly works on planning for the annual Nossal Environmental Summit in which students from different schools are invited to Nossal to partake in discussions and activities that will inform students on what is happening, what they can do and how to spread awareness. Alongside this, Events Team also does advertising for the club including for recycling and bins.

ResourceSmart Team is a group that focuses purely on the ResourceSmart Schools program for Nossal. Currently we are a 2-star sustainability school and completing as many of these modules regularly will aid in achieving 5-star sustainability. This involves modules on how the school can reduce resource use, make cost savings, integrate sustainability into the curriculum and share learnings beyond the school gate.

Waste Management Team focuses particularly on, as the name reveals, where the school's waste goes and how this waste can be reduced or recycled. This involves particular focus on the bins and ensuring people are using the specific bins for their specific purposes, so no money is wasted and the rubbish is disposed of appropriately. They also focus on recycling of certain products that may be difficult to dispose of, such as batteries and phones.

If any of the above appears interesting to you, sign up during the club sign ups or message through Teams or Email to one of us
