Reading/Writing

In the coming weeks, your child will select ‘5 Just Right books’. A ‘Just Right book’ is a text that is not ‘too hard’ or ‘too easy’ for your child to read. ‘It is Just Right’ as Goldilocks would say! Our normal routine will involve our students selecting ‘5’ books every Monday and read these books at school everyday and at home with you. This is an important routine and your praise and encouragement as your child’s reading begins to develop, is really important. A friendly reminder to sign the Reading Diary nightly to show that you value their efforts as young readers.

This term, students will be practising the importance of looking at each page in their book (by going on a picture walk) and thinking about what is happening on each page. They will make predictions about what will happen in the story before reading (by looking at the front cover – the picture, title and what they already know about the topic or theme).

This is the Book Bag students will use to take their 5 'Just Right' books home. This is an essential item that students will use not only in Prep, but for the rest of their school years. If you haven't ordered one yet, you can click here to place an order through RHSport.

Library starts next week! We kindly ask that our Preps bring in the black bag that they took home during their transition day last year. They will need this bag to borrow a book from our school library. Please refer to the timetable for your child’s library time. This will need to be returned each week to borrow a new book.

Students will be given opportunities to write about things they know a lot about and build on their belief that “they are great young writers with amazing ideas to share”. They will be encouraged to sketch their message, add a label and have a go saying the words they want to write, listen to the sounds they hear and write the letters that make those sounds.

We encourage our students to be ‘Brave Writers’ and have a go, even if this means writing strings of letters. It is important to think about what they are going to write, rehearse it and then have a go writing it. We celebrate all efforts and attempts.
