Year 3 Term 4 Newsletter
Welcome Back!
Welcome back to Term Four. To kick off our final term we have many exciting curricular and extracurricular events planned. Please have a look at the calendar and keep an eye out for notices coming home via Compass.
Mathematics
In addition to developing our knowledge of number facts across the four operations, emphasis will be placed on fractions, number patterns, number stories, data and chance, 2D and 3D shapes and times tables. Problem Solving will also be studied by exploring open-ended real life questions and discovering multiple ways to answer questions.
Wellbeing
Every day after lunchtime, students will continue to participate in mindfulness activities. These include Smiling Minds mediation and mindfulness colouring in. This helps students to take some time to refocus and be ready to learn for the afternoon.
Research shows that the Smiling Minds program can assist with students' sleep, wellbeing, managing emotions, concentration and classroom school behaviour.
Each week students are also taught social and emotional skills through our Friendly Schools program. Students are reflective of their experiences and are able to identify areas of their lives that would benefit from these skills.
English
This term our reading focuses will be on inferential comprehension strategies, fluency, rhyming, summarizing, visual clues for comprehension, identifying the point of view in a text and prefixes, suffixes and homophones.
For writing our focuses will include autobiographies, biographies, verbs . Students will look at the structure of these texts and use their knowledge of VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation) to improve their writing. Students will end up publishing their own autobiography and a procedural piece.
For speaking and listening, students will be asking relevant questions, providing meaningful feedback during News Report Presentations, creating and using cue cards and varying the tone of their voice when presenting to the class.
Excursions and Incursions
During Term 3 we had some very engaging Incursions ( Lorraine Marwood and hands on Maths ) and Excursions ( Half Moon Bay ) - see the above photo gallery.
Homework
Homework will continue to be sent home to complement the learning the children are undertaking within the classroom.
Students will be required to choose two activities from the homework BINGO grid each week. They will then write a reflection in their Homework book. Mathletics tasks will also be set that are related to the topics that are being taught in class.
Please encourage your child to complete their homework.
Unit of Inquiry
This term the students will be investigating States of Matter through our Inquiry Unit, ‘Melting Moments’. We will be looking at the properties of materials and investigate how they change state with the application of heat. The students will participate in research and design activities to enrich their knowledge. The children will also be attending an incursion based around this interesting topic.
Our end of year excursion will be to Up Unlimited - more details to follow.
