Year 1/2 students will further develop their sense of beat and rhythm through movement, rhymes, call and response songs, chants and singing games. Students will begin to identify how many sounds are on a beat and and read rhythms using music notation. They will also explore their responses to different types of music and build their vocabulary to describe music and the emotions they feel. When singing songs, both with the class and on their own, students will focus on matching pitch and rhythm. They will listen and respond to songs that are sung for particular occasions such as birthdays, sporting and cultural celebrations. Students will practise how to hold and play percussion instruments safely and responsibly as part of an ensemble.
