Independence Centre

Curriculum

Selamat tinggal!

While it was only a short week, we achieved so much in the Independence Centre.

In Literacy we began our week focusing on the reading strategy of Summarising to support our understanding of the texts we read and view. We explored how we can identify the main idea of texts and paragraphs and how to succinctly summarise important events. We then showcased our understanding of the different reading strategies we have been focusing on over the term including Predicting, Clarifying, Questioning and Summarising. Keep your eyes on Seesaw to see how students put these into practise in their Reciprocal Reading Roles Portfolio.

Identifying VCOP in their writing
Identifying VCOP in their writing

In Writing, students continued to work through the Writer’s Process by editing and publishing a piece of their writing. They focused on identifying the different WOW words and phrases, connectives, openers and punctuation they used. By identifying these elements of their writing, they can then see areas of improvement by adding or upleveling words/phrases. This piece of writing students have chosen to edit and publish will also be available to view on their Seesaw Portfolio.

Exploring duration and elapsed time
Exploring duration and elapsed time

During Maths this week, students started their iFlicks Time and Data project. They explored how to use a timetable to plan a day at the movies, factoring in eating and bathroom breaks, as well as the duration of each movie. Students could then take on a range of challenge questions exploring converting betweens seconds, minutes and hours as well as identifying 12- and 24-hour time. Students will continue their iFlicks project this week, focusing on the Data element by collecting and displaying data in a range of ways.

Inner Critic vs. Inner Coach was a continued focus in our Wellbeing sessions. Your “Inner Coach” refers to the positive self-talk that you have with yourself when you are succeeding. Whereas your “Inner Critic” is the negative self-talk that is more likely to come out if you've made a mistake or working on something that you feel is difficult. By identifying when and what our Inner Critic is saying, it can help us become more self-aware and be able to flip the negative thoughts into positive motivations that help our growth mindset. When did you or your child/s listen to your Inner Coach last week?

Have a wonderful week!

NAPLAN - Year 3 and 5

To ensure a smooth transition for the upcoming NAPLAN tests in May, students in Years 3 and 5 will undertake a practice test in late March (date TBC). The data from the practice test will not be used for assessment purposes but to familiarise students with the format. Over the next week or two, please ensure all students in Years 3 and 5 have downloaded the NAP Locked Down Browser App or have updated it to its latest update.
