The start to 2022 has been a wet one and the rainfall over the past two weeks has impacted many communities across New South Wales and Queensland. Each one of our families has either been impacted or knows of someone who has been by the recent extreme weather events. If your family and home has been adversely affected by the localised flooding recently, please contact the school as we may be able to offer support.

The school has had minimal localised flooding. Learning and Out of Hours School Services have not been impacted by the weather. If your child is able to attend school they should.

Parking around the school in the afternoon

School staff have received a number of complaints from both parents and local residents about members of our school community not adhering to road rules when picking their children up in the afternoon. This in turn puts the safety of others at risk.

I strongly encourage you to:

Keep your eyes on the road.
Adhere to the signage and park only where you can.
Be mindful of pedestrians and other drivers.
Be prepared and plan your time so you are not rushing.

While on gate duty, I have witnessed a number of incidents where the safety of pedestrians has been at risk because of drivers not doing one of the four listed above.

Pedestrian safety is an ongoing issue at LPS and the recent weather has resulted in poorer driver behaviour. Please be mindful of others before and after school times.

Check-in assessments

Years 4 and 6 will participate in departmental check-in assessments in the next couple of weeks. This assessment provides data to school staff to determine how students are tracking with their learning. It helps staff to determine the impact of our teaching practices and the learning programs, ensuring that we are reflecting regularly and making adjustments. The information collected with the assessments, along with classroom work samples, guide stage teaching teams in focusing their professional learning and setting further goals for student achievement.

All students will attempt the check-in assessments. Students will be highly supported through the process.

COVID-19 restrictions update

I wrote to you about updates in processes that began to be implemented on 28 February. A reminder that:

All students will leave at 2.50pm of an afternoon through their designated gates.
Due to being unable to provide physical distancing exiting through the gates, parents, who are dropping off and picking their children up will wait at the gates.
The uniform shop is open from 3pm til 3.25pm on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
You were provided with RAT kits to be used if your child has COVID like symptoms.
If your child has COVID like symptoms they must remain at home until these symptoms are gone. If these symptoms are the result of a health condition, please speak with your General Practitioner about providing this information to the school.

Upgrades to the school

The school was selected to be part of a pilot program updating lighting around the school. All of the school’s lights will be changed to LED bulbs.

To minimise disruptions to learning this work will all be completed outside of school during the evening and at night. So, residents are not impacted by the work, all of the classrooms that are close to neighbours will be completed first thing in the afternoon.

The work is due to begin towards the end of March.

The school has progressed with the Cooler Classrooms program with the tender to air condition being approved. I will continue to keep you updated about the school’s advancement through the program and the work that will happen around the school.
