READING CHANGES LIVES

Reading for enjoyment has the most powerful positive impact of any factor on children’s life chances. It really does change young people’s lives!

So what a privilege it has been helping students celebrate books and reading in the Library. Especially in Term 1, we’ve had so much fun connecting with new students and re-engaging with our beloved school community.

LOVE 2 READ AND ‘BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK’ DISPLAY

In February there’s always romance in the air in our school library. We celebrated ‘Love Your Library Month’ by offering student booklovers the opportunity to write down the names of favourite books on a heart shaped piece of paper in exchange for chocolate. The recommendations were displayed for everyone’s enjoyment.

Students also went on ‘a blind date with a book’ which worked as follows. Students chose a book from the display that was lovingly wrapped and decorated with clues by our Teen Library Advisors. Students borrowed the mystery book and took it home to unwrap it and enjoy it as a surprise, like a ‘blind date’ only with a book. One cute year 7 student said they would make a cup of tea at home for their book as she got to know it and we laughed. It was a fun way to discover a new author or to challenge yourself to read something different. All in all it was a fantastic display that kept on giving in the month of February.

VALENTINE’S DAY CARD MAKING ACTIVITY

Nowhere was the romance more obvious than in our Valentine’s Day events on the 8th & 9th of February which was also an opportunity to highlight Library Lovers’ Day. Ms Maree once again helped us create Valentine’s Day cards to tell someone special in our lives how much we loved them.

The card making events were a huge success attended by many students. Ms Maree’s calligraphy skills and guidance were magical and just what we needed to create a buzz of creativity in the Library.

TEEN LIBRARY ADVISOR SIGN UPS

An unprecedented number of students, a whopping 114 students have signed up for the Teen Library Advisory Trial Period which has formally begun. The Library is now a hive of activity with students busy reviewing books, creating displays, selecting books and organising activities. Congratulations to all TLAs for making our school library the heart of the school and the best in the world.

FIRST TLA MEETING AND INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

Our first TLA meeting, devoted to International Women’s Day, was hosted by our very own senior TLA, Rabiha (F12). Special guest speakers were our wonderful Principal, Mrs Ogden, our Associate Principal, Ms Watmough, who is another fabulous leader and unabashed feminist in our school, and Fahma (F12), our brand new School Captain, who all inspired us to get behind the campaign to break the bias and create an inclusive, more equal society.

Congratulations to Ishani C7 for the clear and respectful Acknowledgment of Country, to Gracie, Steve, Noora, Xhevrije and anyone else helping with the signing in of TLAs to the meeting, to our sensational paparazzi Heather and Shabnam, to Haya and Dilani for their eloquent thanking of guests, for the behind the scenes decorating, badge making and posters led by Gracie and Noora and of course to the best audience of feminist TLA boys and girls anyone could wish for.

This is what some students had to say about the lunchtime event held on March 8th in the Library:

It was wonderful, the stories and experiences that were shared by Mrs. Ogden, Ms. Watmough and Fahma, as well as the participation of boys in the audience compared to previous years. While International Women's Day is a time to celebrate women's achievements, it is also a time to see the support from men and boys. After all, it's a campaign and needs to be supported by boys and men, so thanks to all of them for their participation yesterday and for their ongoing support. Let's break the bias!
-Rabiha F12

It was an absolute great event, having so many boys, Mrs Ogden, Fahma, Gracie, Steve and Noora for helping with the sign in. I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to more meetings, Thank You!
-Alireza E9

The event yesterday was perfect. It was well planned and went accordingly. I know that we had very limited time, but we made good use of the space and the time we did have. We had many contributions and a number of supportive males. There were very good questions and answers as well. The display was great, Heather and Shabnam's photography, Mrs Ogden and Ms Watmough's speaking, and the other guests. The TLA community is so supportive of newcomers and I'm grateful. Thank you for a perfect first meeting, everyone!!

It was one of the best I have seen in years. It had lots of people there which was good.
-Steven E12

The speeches Ms Ogden, Ms Watmough and Fahma shared were all moving and inspirational to the females in the audience like me. It was a great, fun event and I’m excited for more to come.
