Around the Traps - Foundation/1

Bianca Vescio / Markeeta Green

Literacy

In Foundation this week we are working on the sounds b, c, g, h. The students are learning to segment and blend words with these sounds, as well as the sounds we have already learnt.

In Grade 1 we have been looking at the many different ways to represent the /c/ sound in words - C as in cat, k as in kitten, ck as in stack and q as in quest. We will move on to the different ways to spell /w/ - w as in worm and wh as in when, as well as the spelling of /ng/ at the end of this week.

We have continued to work with the book ‘Snail and Turtle are Friends’. This week we will be using our mentor text to create our own version of this story. Students will be choosing characters, writing the sentences on each page and illustrating the story with pictures that make sense based on the sentence they have written.

Maths

Foundation

We have been working on numbers from 11 - 20. The students have been engaged with activities to match the numeral with the correct quantities.

Grade One

We have been continuing to work on 2 digit place value this week. We have also extended this knowledge to our hundreds chart - using the idea of adding 10 and taking away 10 from a number and seeing how the place value changes. We have also been looking at some informal units of measurement. Students found great pleasure in measuring some ‘under the sea’ animals with a range of different materials.

Inquiry

As part of our ‘Growing Older and Wiser’ unit, students have been learning about how it is important, as we grow older, to make sure we express our emotions with our words instead of bottling them up and keeping them inside. We spoke about how this skill allows us to ask for help easier. Students first identified what different emotions looked like, and then spoke about ‘what bugs them’ or what makes them feel annoyed. By identifying the things that annoy students, they are becoming more aware of their emotions.

RE (Religion)

Our focus has been on learning about St. Joseph the patron Saint of our school. The students have been learning a new song to sing at Assembly this Friday.
